Enhancing App Security on Google Play

We’re constantly investing in new tools and services to help developers build secure Android applications. This includes the application sandbox and Security APIs in the platform, Security APIs in Google Play Services, and even open source testing tools. Last year, Google Play also helped developers enhance the security of their applications by looking directly at the code they’ve written and offering suggestions for improvements.

The Google Play App Security Improvement Program is the first of its kind. It has two core components: We provide developers with security tips to help them build more secure apps, and we help developers identify potential security enhancements when uploaded to Google Play. This week, to help educate developers, Kristian Monsen, one of our engineers, gave a presentation about security best practices at the Samsung Developer Conference. And in 2015, we worked with developers to improve the security of over 100,000 apps through the program.

Before any app is accepted into Google Play, it is scanned for safety and security, including potential security issues. We also continuously re-scan the over one million apps in Google Play for additional threats.

If your app is flagged for a potential security issue, you will be notified immediately to help you quickly address the issue and help keep your users safe. We’ll deliver alerts to you using both email and the Google Play Developer Console, with links to a support page with details about how to improve the app.

Typically, these notifications will include a timeline for delivering the improvement to users as quickly as possible. Applications may be required to make security improvements before any other app updates can be be published.

You can confirm that you’ve fully addressed the issue by uploading the new version of your app to the Google Play Developer Console. Be sure to increment the version number of the fixed app. After a few hours, check the Developer Console for the security alert; if it’s no longer there, you’re all set!

Final Developer Preview before Android 7 0 Nougat begins rolling out

As we close in on the public rollout of Android 7.0 Nougat to devices later this summer, today we’re releasing Developer Preview 5, the last milestone of this preview series. Last month’s Developer Preview included the final APIs for Nougat; this preview gives developers the near-final system updates for all of the supported preview devices, helping you get your app ready for consumers.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s included in the final Developer Preview of Nougat:

• System images for Nexus and other preview devices
• An emulator that you can use for doing the final testing of your apps to make sure they’re ready
• The final N APIs (API level 24) and latest system behaviors and UI
• The latest bug fixes and optimizations across the system and in preinstalled apps

Working with this latest Developer Preview, you should make sure your app handles all of the system behavior changes in Android N, like Doze on the Go, background optimizations, screen zoom, permissions changes, and more. Plus, you can take advantage of new developer features in Android N such as Multi-window support, Direct Reply and other notifications enhancements, Direct boot, new emojis and more.

Publish your apps to alpha, beta or production channels in Google Play

After testing your apps with Developer Preview 5 you should publish the updates to Google Play soon. We recommend compiling against, and optionally targeting, API 24 and then publishing to your alpha, beta, or production channels in the Google Play Developer Console. A great strategy to do this is using Google Play’s beta testing feature to get early feedback from a small group of users -- including Developer Preview users — and then doing a staged rollout as you release the updated app to all users.

How to get Developer Preview 5

If you are already enrolled in the Android Beta program, your devices will get the Developer Preview 5 update right away, no action is needed on your part. If you aren’t yet enrolled in Android Beta, the easiest way to get started is by visiting android.com/beta and opt-in your eligible Android phone or tablet -- you’ll soon receive this preview update over-the-air. As always, you can also download and flash this update manually. The Nougat Developer Preview is available for Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, and Pixel C devices, as well as General Mobile 4G [Android One] devices.

Today at the Big Android BBQ we announced that we have teamed up with General Assembly (GA), a global education institution transforming thinkers into creators, to create a new Android Development Immersive training course. This 12-week, full-time course will be offered beginning in January 2016 at GA’s New York campus, and in February at GA’s San Francisco campus and will roll out to additional campuses over the course of the next year. It is the first in-person training program of its kind that Google Developers has designed and built.

The Google Developer Relations team teamed up with General Assembly to ensure the Android Development Immersive bootcamp provides developers with access to the best instructors and latest and greatest hands-on material to create successful app experiences and businesses. To effectively reach over a billion of Android users globally, its important for developers to build high-quality apps that are beautifully designed, performant, and delightful to use.

“We are constantly looking at the economy and job market for what skills are most in-demand. The only way in-game to earn Pokecoins is by taking down and fortifying Gyms. Heres how this method works:

• Find a Gym and either take it down or fortify it so you can put your Pokemon there. If you dont know how to do this, check out our awesome Gym capturing and fortifying guide here!
• Once every 21 hours, youll be able to go into the Shop and "cash in". You will get a commensurate number of Pokecoins based on how many Pokemon you have on a Gym.
• The button to grab it is in the top right corner of the Shop. Please note, there isnt a confirmation screen. Once you press it, thats it for 21 hours. You cannot press the button when you have zero gyms.
• You get 10 coins and 500 Stardust for every Pokemon you have on a Gym. If you have five Pokemon on five Gyms, youll earn 50 coins and 2500 Stardust.
• You can have an infinite number of Pokemon on an infinite number of Pokemon Gyms. However, the "cash in" maxes out at 10.
• Because of this, you can earn up to 100 Pokecoins and 5000 Stardust every 21 hours!

Of course, this means youll have to be rather aggressive when it comes to taking down Gyms and fortifying them because others will be trying to get them as well. This will likely require tons of Potions so stock up!

What can you buy with Pokecoins?

Just in case youre new to the game, well quickly go over the things you can actually buy with Pokecoins:

• Poke Balls – 20 Poke Balls for 100 coins, 100 Poke Balls for 460 coins, 200 Poke Balls for 800 coins.

Android Mobile Vision restores operation and adds Text API

As an important framework for finding objects in photos and video, Mobile Vision operation for Android devices is restored in Google Play Services v9.2.

This new version of Google Play Services fixes a download issue in Google Play Services v.9.0 that caused a service outage. See release notes for details.

We’re also pleased to announce the Text API, a new component for Android Mobile Vision.

The Text API’s optical character recognition technology reads Latin character text (e.g. English, Spanish, German, French, etc.) in photos and returns the text as well as the organizational structure (paragraphs, lines, words). Mobile apps can now:

• Organize photos that contain text
• Automate tedious data entry for credit cards, receipts, and business cards
• Translate documents (along with the Cloud Translate API)
• Keep track of real objects, such as reading the numbers on subway trains
• Provide accessibility features
