Chrome Web Store Adds Compatibility Information

Chrome Web Store Adds Compatibility Information

Chrome Web Store now shows if an app, extension or theme is "compatible with your device". Google also uses a small icon to reassure users that they can install the app, extension or theme and it will work on their device.

If the app is not compatible, the blue "add to Chrome" button is replaced by a red "not compatible" button, just like before. Click the "not compatible" button and youll see a message like: "This application is not supported on this computer. Installation has been disabled. The following problems are detected: This app runs only on Chrome OS".

Learn top tips from Kongregate to achieve success with Store Listing Experiments

Learn top tips from Kongregate to achieve success with Store Listing Experiments

Posted by Lily Sheringham, Developer Marketing at Google Play

Editor’s note: This is another post in our series featuring tips from developers finding success on Google Play. We recently spoke to games developer Kongregate, to find out how they use Store Listing Experiments successfully. - Ed.

With Store Listing Experiments in the Google Play Developer Console, you can conduct A/B tests on the content of your store listing pages. Test versions of the text and graphics to see which ones perform best, based on install data.

Kongregate increases installs by 45 percent with Store Listing Experiments

Founded in 2006 by brother and sister Jim and Emily Greer, Kongregate is a leading mobile games publisher specializing in free to play games. Kongregate used Store Listing Experiments to test new content for the Global Assault listing page on Google Play. By testing with different audience sizes, they found a new icon that drove 92 percent more installs, while variant screenshots achieved an impressive 14 percent improvement. By picking the icons, screenshots, and text descriptions that were the most sticky with users, Kongregate saw installs increase by 45 percent on the improved page.

Kongregate’s Mike Gordon, VP of Publishing; Peter Eykemans, Senior Producer; and Tammy Levy, Director of Product for Mobile Games, talk about how to successfully optimise mobile game listings with Store Listing Experiments.

Kongregate’s tips for success with Store Listing Experiments

Jeff Gurian, Sr. Director of Marketing at Kongregate also shares his do’s and don’ts on how to use experiments to convert more of your visitors, thereby increasing installs. Check them out below:

Do’s Don’ts
Do start by testing your game’s icon. Icons can have the greatest impact (positive or negative) on installs — so test early! Don’t test too many variables at once. It makes it harder to determine what drove results. The more variables you test, the more installs (and time) you’ll need to identify a winner.
Do have a question or objective in mind when designing an experiment. For example, does artwork visualizing gameplay drive more installs than artwork that doesn’t? Don’t test artwork only. Also test screenshot ordering, videos, and text to find what combinations increase installs.
Do run experiments long enough to achieve statistical significance. How long it takes to get a result can vary due to changes in traffic sources, location of users, and other factors during testing. Don’t target too small an audience with your experiment variants. The more users you expose to your variants, the more data you collect, the faster you get results!
Do pay attention to the banner, which tells you if your experiment is still “in progress.” When it has collected enough data, the banner will clearly tell you which variant won or if it was a tie. Don’t interpret a test where the control attribute performs better than variants as a waste. You can still learn valuable lessons from what “didn’t work.” Iterate and try again!

Miniclip releases its popular tank shooter diep io to the Google Play Store

Miniclip releases its popular tank shooter diep io to the Google Play Store

If youve found yourself among the millions of Agar.ios active users or find yourself living in between World of Tank sessions, Miniclips diep.io is offering a molded-for-mobile experience for tank drivers just like you.

Miniclip describes diep.io as an evolution of the experience offered in Agar.io, a viral hit made even more popular by its cameo in Netflixs House of Cards. Thats fitting description for a spiritual successor to Agar.io, a multiplayer game in which you have to ensure the survival of your little cell by chomping down on rivals.

Instead of taking cover behind viruses and going Pac-Man on smaller cells, youll find yourself raining rapid-fire orbs after enemy drivers and hiding behind floaty polygons for momentary refuge from volleys of red balls sent back at you.

agar.io reviewSee also: Hands-on with Agar.io: what the heck is it? Why is it so popular?1

Because this is a class-based game, expect to jump into this game far outgunned by tanks and drivers decorated with high ranks and wide arsenals. You wont have access to upgrades until level 15, but youll be rewarded with class options thatll help you do more than just annoy more advanced players with your pea shooter.

Class paths available at rank 15 include Flank Guard and its rear cannon, Twin and it dual primaries, Machine Gun and its rapid fire, and the range-extending Sniper class. Each of those class paths fork at level 30 and again at level 45.

Standing in place of the WASD keys and mouse support on the browser version, the Android port of game uses virtual joysticks to move your tank and aim its deadly red-orb cannons. As a result, desktop players with tactical keyboard and high-caliber gaming mice wont be able to wreak havoc in the mobile game.

Like the browser version of the game, diep.io for Android is free to play and contains in-app purchases. So are you gearing up to give diep.io a go on Android? If youre already playing it, let us know what you think about it in the comments below.

Founded in 2010, SGN is a Los Angeles based mobile game developer with hit titles including Cookie Jam, Panda Pop, Juice Jam and Book of Life: Sugar Smash. They now have more than 200 employees and are one of the fastest growing cross-platform gaming developers.

SGN used Store Listing experiments to test multiple variants across their portfolio of games. For Cookie Jam, they saw an 8 percent increase in conversions simply by changing the background color of their app icon. They also saw increased installs following tests with the Panda Pop app icon and by changing the character in their Book of Life: Sugar Smash app icon.

Watch Josh Yguado, Co-founder and President of SGN, and Matthew Casertano, SVP of Game Operations, talk about how using Store Listing Experiments helped SGN improve their ROI, conversion rates and gamer retention.

Google’s new Play Store algorithm to halve size of updates

Google’s new Play Store algorithm to halve size of updates

Google Play Store new icon crop

The amount of data required for updating Google Play apps can really send your mobile bill through the roof, especially if you arent using Wi-Fi. Fortunately, Google has heard your concerns, and rolled out a new Delta algorithm, bsdiff, which reduces the app update size and lets you save on the data required for updating them.

Googles new algorithm does this by further compressing the size of patches for apps and games. According to a blog post by Anthony Morris, SWE Google Play, for about 98 percent of app updates from the Play Store, only deltas to APK files are downloaded and merged with the existing files to reduce the size of the updates. Now, Googles new algorithm will further reduce the patches by up to 50 percent. As he explains in the post,

"For approximately 98 percent of app updates from the Play Store, only changes (deltas) to APK files are downloaded and merged with the existing files, reducing the size of updates. We recently rolled out a delta algorithm, bsdiff, that further reduces patches by up to 50 percent or more compared to the previous algorithm. Bsdiff is specifically targeted to produce more efficient deltas of native libraries by taking advantage of the specific ways in which compiled native code changes between versions. To be most effective, native libraries should be stored uncompressed (compression interferes with delta algorithms)."

Google has also applied the new algorithm to APK Expansion Files to allow users to include additional large files of up to 2GB in size with their apps. This means that the download size of your initial installs will now be lower by about 12 percent, and your updates by approximately 65 percent.

"APK Expansion Files allow you to include additional large files up to 2GB in size (e.g. high resolution graphics or media files) with your app, which is especially popular with games. We have recently expanded our delta and compression algorithms to apply to these APK Expansion Files in addition to APKs, reducing the download size of initial installs by 12 percent, and updates by 65 percent on average."

Google-Play-Store-11

Google really cares about you and doesnt want you to pay unnecessarily high data charges when you update your favorite apps. So it has also updated the Play Store descriptions to include the actual download size of the apps instead of the size of their APKs. So instead of seeing just the app size earlier on Google Play and remaining in the dark about how much data and storage the update would actually consume, youll now get to see the precise size of the app you want to install or update. Cool, huh?

If the changes made to Google Play arent reflecting on your screen yet, dont panic because, as always, they are being rolled out to all users and should reach you sometime in the coming weeks.

Let us know in the comments below if you think Google Plays new algorithm will help reduce your data usage!

Koushs new screen sharing app Inkwire is available in beta on the Play Store

Koushs new screen sharing app Inkwire is available in beta on the Play Store

Screenshot_20160722-115048

Koushik Dutta, a.k.a Koush, is one of Androids most popular developers. From the custom recovery ClockworkMod to ROM Manager, to Allcast, to Vysor, his apps are downloaded almost religiously amongst power users, developers, and tinkerers. In the last few hours, hes made a new app available in beta, named Inkwire.

Based on Koushs previous app, Vysor, which mirrors your Android devices screen on a computer, Inkwire goes one step further and shares the screen to another Android device, letting someone else help with a problem or issue, which could be especially useful for tech support workers or, as Koush says, independent app developers.
