Kevin Spacey is investing in a mysterious gaming smartphone startup Wonder

A new report claims to have some information on a startup called Wonder. The company is apparently working on a gaming-themed smartphone and counts actor Kevin Spacey among its investors.

At the moment, the official Wonder website is pretty bare bones, with an astronaut helmet logo and a "Coming Soon" label, along with an email address signup bar to get more updates as they are revealed. TechCrunch says it has a little more information on Wonders plans:

According to sources close to the team, Wonder plans to create a smartphone for gamers. Apparently the goal is to build an object so futuristic, it becomes a style icon, starting conversations wherever users go.

The article adds that some of the other investors in Wonder include Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, former NBA Commissioner David Stern and former Facebook COO Owen Van Natta. Wonder currently has a 30-person team and it just hired Tyler Carper, who worked as VP of Engineering at both HTC and more recently Cyanogen:

Carper says "I love the idea of innovating and disrupting the fast changing environment around mobile technology and entertainment. Its one of the biggest consumer market opportunities in the world", implying a gaming-focused phone is indeed Wonders product.

What do you think Wonder might be up to? Let us know your speculation in the comments!

Huawei half year profit up 40 thanks to solid smartphone sales

Huawei half year profit up 40 thanks to solid smartphone sales

Huawei-1

Huawei seems to be one of the few smartphone vendors actually making fat stacks of cash out of smartphones rather than having their mobile division propped up by other business units. While Huawei also makes plenty of its money from enterprise and network infrastructure globally, it is also enjoying solid growth in smartphone sales.

In its most recent financial report, issued today, Huawei reported H1 smartphone revenue is up 40% over the same period last year, despite a recent downturn. While the company didnt provide a per-division breakdown of the figures, it reported audited sales revenue across its three core businesses of CNY245.5 billion (~$36.7 billion).

As Sabrina Meng, Huaweis chief financial officer notes, "We are confident that Huawei will maintain its current momentum, and round out the full year in a positive financial position backed by sound ongoing operations."

Speaking about the consumer business specifically, Huaweis statement notes it has "maintained steady growth globally. Its flagship products, such as the P9, Mate 8, Honor V8, and MateBook, have all won significant support from consumers around the world. Huawei has become one of the most favored device brands in nearly 30 countries".

With a great lineup of solid devices at every price point, diverse portfolio, high-performing other business units and a strict adherence to its "pipe strategy", Huawei is on the up and up. Although the reception of the Huawei P9 might not have been as strong as the company would have liked, the upcoming Mate S2 and Mate 9 (expected at IFA 2016) will likely set the flagship record straight.

What do you think of Huawei? What is your favorite Huawei device?

Today, at CES, Lenovo announced the development of the first consumer-ready smartphone with Project Tango. By adding a few extra sensors and some computer vision software, Project Tango transforms your smartphone into a magic lens that lets you place digital information on your physical world.

*Renderings only. Not the official Lenovo device.

To support the continued growth of the ecosystem, we’re also inviting developers from around the world to submit their ideas for gaming and utility apps created using Project Tango. We’ll pick the best ideas and provide funding and engineering support to help bring them to life, as part of the app incubator. Even better, the finished apps will be featured on Lenovo’s upcoming device. The submission period closes on February 15, 2016.

All you need to do is tell us about your idea and explain how Project Tango technologies will enable new experiences. Additionally, we’ll ask you to include the following materials:

  • Project schedule including milestones for development –– we’ll reach out to the selected developers by March 15, 2016
  • Visual mockups of your idea including concept art
  • Smartphone app screenshots and videos, such as captured app footage
  • Appropriate narrative including storyboards, etc.
  • Breakdown of your team and its members
  • One pager introducing your past app portfolio and your company profile

For some inspiration, Lowes Home Improvement teamed with developer Elementals Web to demonstrate a use case they are each working on for the launch. In the app, you can point your Project Tango-enabled smartphone at your kitchen to see where a new refrigerator or dishwasher might fit virtually.

Elsewhere, developer Schell Games let’s you play virtual Jenga on any surface with friends. But this time, there is no cleanup involved when the blocks topple over.

There are also some amazing featured apps for Project Tango on Google Play. You can pick up your own Project Tango Tablet Development Kit here to brainstorm new fun and immersive experiences that use the space around you. Apply now!

Moto Z Review A Smartphone Like No Other

Moto Z Review A Smartphone Like No Other

With an aluminum frame barely 5mm thick and slap-on "mods" that give it crazy capabilities, the Moto Z is unlike any smartphone you can buy today. Its also the latest installment in one of the most inconsistent product families in mobile technology.

In 2013, Motorola introduced a small, modest mobile that tried to redefine what a smartphone should be, and it called it the "Moto X." The next two years would see the company gradually abandon most of the principles it laid down with that first phone, making the X bigger and brawnier to better battle the Galaxy-class competition from Samsung.

For 2016, Motorola (now a Lenovo sub-brand called simply "Moto") has taken its flagship smartphone so far afield of its origins that it isnt even an "X" anymore. The result is a smartphone that I like very much – one Ill probably buy when the unlocked edition arrives in the fall – but one Im not sure Id recommend to many people. Join me for the Moto Z Droid Edition review by MrMobile!

About this review

MrMobiles Moto Z Review was based on six days trial of a Moto Z Droid Edition review device on loan from Motorola/Verizon Wireless. The Moto Z Droid Edition was not paired to a wearable for this review. Test areas included the North Fork of Long Island, New York; Amtraks CT/NH/MA Northeast Corridor; and Greater Boston, Massachusetts.
