Better Google Drive Sync

Better Google Drive Sync

Google Drives apps for Windows and Mac got better. You can now select which subfolders to sync with your computer. Until now, you could only select the top-level folders.

Google Drives sync options show the size of your individual subfolders and the space remaining on your computer, just in case youre running out of free disk space. Another new feature shows a warning when youre deleting or moving a file thats shared with other people.

Keep users’ content safe with Google Drive

Keep users’ content safe with Google Drive

Posted by Dan McGrath, Product Manager, Drive SDK & Partnerships

Chances are, you’re developing an app that creates or manages data. And chances are, your users really care about that content — be it photos and documents, or calorie counts and exercise stats.

Whatever it is, you probably don’t want it stuck on a single device — especially since people are replacing their phones and tablets every couple of years (every now and then… shtuff happens). With Google Drive, you can help users access their data at any time, from just about anywhere:

  • Drive APIs give developers a free and easy way to save and retrieve user content using Google Drive
  • In Android 6.0 Marshmallow, there’s also a new way to save app data and settings to Drive automatically

As your app grows in popularity, Google Drive can scale along with it. In fact, WhatsApp now lets users back up their media and conversations to Google Drive, which translates to about one saved item for every person on the planet — every single day.

Visit our developer site to learn more, and definitely reach out if you want to discuss more in-depth integrations. We’re here to help make your app great, and to keep users’ content safe.

Google Drive Bonus Storage Is Expiring

Google Drive Bonus Storage Is Expiring

2 years ago, Google offered 10 GB of free storage for installing the Quickoffice app for Android or iOS. Unfortunately, Googles bonus storage is about to expire.

"We wanted to let you know that you have bonus Google Drive storage expiring on Oct 3 2015. While this bonus period is coming to an end, you can always purchase additional storage," informs Google. "Rest assured that your files in Google Drive remain safe and accessible by you and the people youve shared them with. You just wont be able to add or sync any files unless you are using less than your current available storage or youve purchased additional storage."

Basically, Google wont delete your files, but youll have to delete some of them or purchase more storage if you actually used the 10 GB bonus storage. Since the storage is shared between Gmail, Google Photos and Google Drive, all of these services are affected and you can also delete Gmail messages with large attachments or photos and videos from Google Photos that use your Google storage. Heres how to find Gmail messages with big attachments and a list of Google Drive files sorted by size.
