Google adds Emergency Location Service to Android rolling out first in the UK and Estonia

Google adds Emergency Location Service to Android rolling out first in the UK and Estonia

Logo Soup Final2

You may be wary of making your location available to apps and service on Android, but that uneasiness goes away in an emergency situation. If you call emergency services, you want them to know exactly where you are, and now Android has the tools to make that happen. Well, if you live in the UK or Estonia. Those are the first two countries with support for the new Emergency Location Service.

When you call in an emergency with this service active, your location will automatically be transmitted directly to first responders (without passing through Google).

Google Maps is rolling out Wi Fi only mode and mass transit delay notifications to some users

Google Maps is rolling out Wi Fi only mode and mass transit delay notifications to some users

_template_v2

A couple of very useful features have started rolling out to a few lucky Google Maps users in the last couple of days. If youve been following along with our APK Teardowns, you might remember sections covering notifications for mass transit delays and an option to restrict data usage to Wi-Fi only. If youve been eager to see either of these, now might be a good time to open up Maps and poke around.

Final Developer Preview before Android 7 0 Nougat begins rolling out

Final Developer Preview before Android 7 0 Nougat begins rolling out

Posted by Dave Burke, VP of Engineering

As we close in on the public rollout of Android 7.0 Nougat to devices later this summer, today we’re releasing Developer Preview 5, the last milestone of this preview series. Last month’s Developer Preview included the final APIs for Nougat; this preview gives developers the near-final system updates for all of the supported preview devices, helping you get your app ready for consumers.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s included in the final Developer Preview of Nougat:

  • System images for Nexus and other preview devices
  • An emulator that you can use for doing the final testing of your apps to make sure they’re ready
  • The final N APIs (API level 24) and latest system behaviors and UI
  • The latest bug fixes and optimizations across the system and in preinstalled apps

Working with this latest Developer Preview, you should make sure your app handles all of the system behavior changes in Android N, like Doze on the Go, background optimizations, screen zoom, permissions changes, and more. Plus, you can take advantage of new developer features in Android N such as Multi-window support, Direct Reply and other notifications enhancements, Direct boot, new emojis and more.

Publish your apps to alpha, beta or production channels in Google Play

After testing your apps with Developer Preview 5 you should publish the updates to Google Play soon. We recommend compiling against, and optionally targeting, API 24 and then publishing to your alpha, beta, or production channels in the Google Play Developer Console. A great strategy to do this is using Google Play’s beta testing feature to get early feedback from a small group of users -- including Developer Preview users — and then doing a staged rollout as you release the updated app to all users.

How to get Developer Preview 5

If you are already enrolled in the Android Beta program, your devices will get the Developer Preview 5 update right away, no action is needed on your part. If you aren’t yet enrolled in Android Beta, the easiest way to get started is by visiting android.com/beta and opt-in your eligible Android phone or tablet -- you’ll soon receive this preview update over-the-air. As always, you can also download and flash this update manually. The Nougat Developer Preview is available for Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, and Pixel C devices, as well as General Mobile 4G [Android One] devices.

Thanks so much for all of your feedback so far. Please continue to share feedback or requests either in the N Developer Preview issue tracker, N Preview Developer community, or Android Beta community as we work towards the consumer release later this summer. Android Nougat is almost here!

Also, the Android engineering team will host a Reddit AMA on r/androiddev to answer all your technical questions about the platform tomorrow, July 19 from 12-2 PM (Pacific Time). We look forward to addressing your questions!

Google Maps rolls out a cleaner look and adds areas of interest

Google Maps rolls out a cleaner look and adds areas of interest

Google Maps is getting a makeover in an update thats currently rolling out to its mobile apps as well as on the desktop. It will offer a cleaner look to the maps themselves while also adding new "areas of interest".

In a blog post, Google stated:

The world is full of information, which means highlighting necessary info on the map without overcrowding it is a balancing act. So as part of this update, weve removed elements that arent absolutely required (like road outlines). The result is a cleaner look that makes it easier to see helpful and actionable information like traffic and transit. And weve improved the typography of street names, points of interest, transit stations, and more to make them more distinguishable from other things on the map, helping you navigate the world with fewer distractions.

The update also includes new orange spots that represent large concentrations of places like restaurants, bars and shops:

To find an "area of interest" just open Google Maps and look around you. When youve found an orange-shaded area, zoom in to see more details about each venue and tap one for more info. Whether youre looking for a hotel in a hot spot or just trying to determine which way to go after exiting the subway in a new place, "areas of interest" will help you find what youre looking for with just a couple swipes and a zoom.

Finally, the update includes some changes to the maps colors so that users can quickly identify man-made and natural features, along with a better way to find important locations like schools, hospitals and more.

Android N Developer Preview 2 out today!

Android N Developer Preview 2 out today!

Posted by Dave Burke, VP of Engineering

Last month, we released the first Developer Preview of Android N, to give you a sneak peek at our next platform. The feedback you’ve shared to-date has helped us catch bugs and improve features. Today, the second release in our series of Developer Previews is ready for you to continue testing against your apps.

This latest preview of Android N fixes a few bugs you helped us identify, such as not being able to connect to hidden Wi-Fi networks (AOSP 203116), Multiwindow pauses (AOSP 203424), and Direct Reply closing an open activity (AOSP 204411), to name just a few. We’re still on the hunt for more; please continue to share feedback, either in the N Developer Preview issue tracker or in the N preview community.

What’s new:

Last month’s Developer Preview introduced a host of new features, like Multi-window, bundled notifications and more. This preview builds on those and includes a few new ones:

  • Vulkan: Vulkan is a new 3D rendering API which we’ve helped to develop as a member of Khronos, geared at providing explicit, low-overhead GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) control to developers and offers a significant boost in performance for draw-call heavy applications. Vulkan’s reduction of CPU overhead allows some synthetic benchmarks to see as much as 10 times the draw-call throughput on a single core as compared to OpenGL ES. Combined with a threading-friendly API design which allows multiple cores to be used in parallel with high efficiency, this offers a significant boost in performance for draw-call heavy applications. With Android N, we’ve made Vulkan a part of the platform; you can try it out on supported devices running Developer Preview 2. Read more here. Vulkan Developer Tools blog here.
  • Launcher shortcuts: Now, apps can define shortcuts which users can expose in the launcher to help them perform actions quicker. These shortcuts contain an Intent into specific points within your app (like sending a message to your best friend, navigating home in a mapping app, or playing the next episode of a TV show in a media app).

An application can publish shortcuts with ShortcutManager.setDynamicShortcuts(List) and ShortcutManager.addDynamicShortcut(ShortcutInfo), and launchers can be expected to show 3-5 shortcuts for a given app.

  • Emoji Unicode 9 support: We are introducing a new emoji design for people emoji that moves away from our generic look in favor of a more human-looking design. If you’re a keyboard or messaging app developer, you should start incorporating these emoji into your apps. The update also introduces support for skin tone variations and Unicode 9 glyphs, like the bacon, selfie and face palm. You can dynamically check for the new emoji characters using Paint.hasGlyph().

New activity emoji

  • API changes: This update includes API changes as we continue to refine features such as multi-window support (you can now specify a separate minimum height and minimum width for an activity), notifications, and others. For details, take a look at the diff reports available in the downloadable API reference package.

  • Bug fixes: We’ve resolved a number of issues throughout the system, including these fixes for issues that you’ve reported through the public issue tracker. Please continue to let us know what you find and follow along with the known issues here.

How to get the update:

The easiest way to get this and later preview updates is by enrolling your devices in the Android Beta Program. Just visit g.co/androidbeta and opt-in your eligible Android phone or tablet -- you’ll soon receive this (and later) preview updates over-the-air. If you’ve already enrolled your device, you’ll receive the update shortly, no action is needed on your part. You can also download and flash this update manually. Developer Preview 2 is intended for developers and not as a daily driver; this build is not yet optimized for performance and battery life.

The N Developer Preview is currently available for Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, and Pixel C devices, as well as General Mobile 4G [Android One] devices. For Nexus Player, the update to Developer Preview 2 will follow the other devices by several days.

To build and test apps with Developer Preview 2, you need to use Android Studio 2.1 -- the same version that was required for Developer Preview 1. You’ll need to check for SDK components updates (including build tools and emulator system images) for Developer Preview 2 -- see here for details.

Thanks so much for all of your feedback so far. Please continue to share feedback, either in the N Developer Preview issue tracker or in the N preview community. The sooner we’re able to get your feedback, the more of of it we will be able to incorporate in the next release of Android.

Check out Facer Hey KittyKitty and more in our Android Wear watch face roundup

Check out Facer Hey KittyKitty and more in our Android Wear watch face roundup

Five fantastic watch faces to add some flair to your smartwatch.

Sometimes you need a little bit of personal flair with your accessories, and your smartwatch is no exception to this rule. Thankfully there are hundreds upon hundreds of different watch faces that allow you to do just that. Rather than making you slog through the good, bad, and ugly watch faces, weve collected five awesome faces that might be new to you.

So if youve been hoping to find something new to spice up your smartwatch, then look no further. Weve got you covered. Keep scrolling to see what weve collected for you this week!

Facer

Sometimes you dont want to decide on a single watch face. Instead you want to have access to plenty of options to switch between multiple watch faces without the hassle of having to constantly go searching through the Google Play Store for them. Thats where Facer comes in. Facer is a free app that boasts dozens of different watch faces from within their app.

There is a ton of content within Facer that you can explore at your leisure. There are unlockable watch faces that are only available once you have completed certain tasks within the app like sharing a watch face with friends. You can explore their top charts for both free and paid watch faces, or you can see their featured ones. The last but not least of the awesomeness is the fact you can easily build your own watch faces from within the app.

HeyKittyKitty

Sometimes you just need a cute watch face to get through a rough day. If thats the case, then the HeyKittyKitty watch face might be just up your alley. This is a super simple watch face that features an adorable kitty along with the time and date, but not much else. You can adjust the time format, select ambient mode, and select whether the animation loops.

At the very bottom of the screen is the current date with the month, day and day of the week. Just above that is the time in a default 12-hour digital style. In the middle of your screen is a cat with a small ball of yarn. If you tap on it, youll get an animation of that cat flopping onto its back for belly rubs. Best of all this watch face is available for the low, low price of absolutely free.

Stopwatch and Timer

Maybe youre training for a 5K, or you just want to know how long it takes you to do 100 pushups. Whatever the reason, having easy access to a stopwatch, and a timer right on your wrist can be handy. Thats where the Stopwatch and Timer watch face comes in. It gets you access to the timers you want, along with the time, date and even battery percentage on your smart watch. Its also got a fair few options that will let you adjust the background, as well as what is showing on the watch face and even what position the information displayed is in.

The time is displayed in digital 24-hour format at the top of your screen. Just under that is the timer on the left, and your stopwatch on the right. By tapping youll either set a timer, or start your stopwatch. At the bottom left of the screen is todays date with the day of week, month and day. On the bottom right is your battery indicator. This watch face can be particularly handy in a pinch and is available for $0.99.

YinYang

For some people, a watch face that just gives you the time with a background is all that you need. If thats the case, then the Yin Yang watch face should interest you. This is a watch face where what you see is what you get, there arent any options to change or adjust anything. What you do get is a background with a yin yang, and the time over top of it.

This watch face displays the time in a classic watch analog style. Youll see tick marks around the edge of your screen to denote the hours of the day. The watch hands will tick off hours, minutes, and seconds as time passes. Thankfully this super simple watch face is available for free.

WatchMaster

WatchMaster is another app that enables you to find and download hundreds of different watch faces. You can search through their free watch faces, brand watch faces, search by category and even see watch faces that are coming to the app in the near future. One of the really cool features of WatchMaster is how many watch face developers are using it. As you scroll through you may see familiar watch faces from the Google Play Store, like the Fiore watch face or the mysterious forest watch face.

While you have the option of only downloading free watch faces, or paying for each watch face separately, there is a third option with WatchMaster. You can opt in to the Pro version of the app, which gives you access to all of the watch faces on their app. You can subscribe yearly for $6.99, or upgrade permanently for $16.99. Part of this subscription fee even goes to creators to ensure that future watch faces will be of a higher quality.

Download: WatchMaster (free)

These are just the 5 watch faces that caught our eye this go round. There are hundreds of different watch faces that are available through the Google Play Store, with more being added every day. No matter what kind of face you want for your smartwatch, there is definitely one out there. Were any of these watch faces up your alley? Do you have a favorite we should know about?
